2022 BREWER'S ASSOCIATION WORLD BEER CUP RESULTS. Congrats to all the winners! These wins can change fortunes for small breweries, so it's always exciting. As usual, there were lots of surprises in the mix. Out of 102 witbier entries the judges decided none deserved Gold or Silver, but awarded Bronze to Allagash 🤷🏼‍♂️ California crushed overall and SoCal swept American IPA. In all the lager categories only 6 German brewers won a medal, but at least Weihenstephaner took gold for German Wheat. There were 4 winners from Portland, OR, where I recently moved. Guess I have to go drink 'em this weekend!
 

3 ADVANCED CICERONES DISCUSS CHANGES IN THE 2021 BJCP GUIDELINES FOR STYLES 1-9 

2021 BJCP Updates to Styles 1-9: I posted episode 3 of The Beer Scholar Family Hour video podcast this week. It’s all about the subtle, but in some cases very impactful, changes to styles 1A though 9C in the 2021 BJCP Style Guidelines, as compared to the 2015 Guidelines. All About Beer is back! Huge congrats to longtime beer journos John Holl and Andy Crouch for acquiring rights to All About Beer (can’t wait to hear all the deets on how they pulled that off!). John Holl was editor of the mag at its height, so I can’t wait to see where these two take it! Congrats fellas, give me some dope stuff to link to in my 6 packs, ha! 

BREWING WATER EXPERT JOHN PALMER GIVES A WATER PRIMER

Everything About Brewing Water: In this Crowdcast vid, the co-author of Waterand all around brewing wizard, John Palmer, talks all about the basics of brewing water science. I'm not saying it's thrilling, but if you brew, this is a great water refresher.

WHAT I’M WATCHING

Watchmen, easily one of the best super hero series ever. First, you have to watch the fantastic 2009 movie (trailer) or the rest won’t make sense. Then, dig into the newer HBO series. All of it is straight up fucking epic and so extremely creative and unique (even though the original comic is from 1985!). Also, it’s perhaps the best film adaptation of a comic book, ever, and is EASILY the best DC comic ever put to film (sorry Batman). The newer HBO series is about the long term effects of the Tulsa race massacre of 1921. It’s an absolutely breathtaking, multigenerational, storyline. 

WHAT I’M LISTENING TO

Phife Dawg Forever (YouTube, Spotify). This posthumous album from the best rapper in A Tribe Called Quest, meaning one of the best of all time, was 2/3rds done when Phife died in 2016. In places it’s a sweet and sappy goodbye from his people, in others Phife shines, just doing his thing. It’s awesome to hear Phife dropping new-to-me bars. Check out Nutshell Pt 2, it features a jaw dropping list of helpers — Ali Shaheed Muhammad, J Dilla (RIP),  Busta Rhymes, & Redman. Sick.
