BRIENNE ALLAN’S 6 PACK
Pick Six: Dedication & Decoction with Brienne Allan in Craft Beer & Brewing. I absolutely love this list of six of brewer Brienne Allan’s faves. She gives the nod to a bunch of classic decocted lagers, light and dark, plus some smoke, and even a mainstream surprise pick. She just got me to add a few new beers to my “really want to try that” list. Definitely worth a peek.
CLASSIC FOR A REASON
Suggestion: Stop Drinking New Beers All the Time by Lew Bryson for The Full Pint. Part “get off my lawn” but mostly just damn true. So many one-off beers just aren’t dialed in, but at the same time there are so many great classic options out there that will deliver you a perfect pint every time (especially if served at a great bar). And yes, Lew, I do indeed want a fresh Sierra Nevada Celebration right now.
SWIPE RIGHT ON ENZYMES
There’s an Enzyme for That by Emily Wang for Craft Beer & Brewing. OK, so we all know about the role of alpha and beta amylase in breaking down starches in the mash (you know about that, right?) but it turns out there are a whole bunch of other enzymes at work from malting through to the fermenter doing all variety of friendly things for our beer. Go learn about them and maybe even consider using some in your home (or pro) brewing!
NEW CRISPR-IZED YEAST FROM OMEGA YEAST
Star Party by Omega Yeast. This is just one of several newer yeast strains created by the wizard-scientists at Omega Yeast. They use CRISPR to splice genes from other bugs into classic yeast strains so that they make crazy amounts to tropical aromatic thiols. This page has the full selection of their crazy “Thiolized” strains. These make me want to do a brew day this weekend!
POEM I’M PONDERING
The More Loving One by W. H. Auden. I’m not big into poetry, but somewhere along the line I ran across this one and I’ve gone back and read it once in awhile because it’s all about choosing happiness and love over indifference in an indifferent universe…which may sound sad-ish to some people, but inspires me. “If equal affection cannot be, let the more loving one be me.”
CAREER CHANGE, SIDE HUSTLE?
Eight Career Podcasts for Creative Professionals by Jess Focht for MediaBistro. I used to be an attorney…I’m still a member of the Bar of NY State, so I guess I still am, officially. Point is, I’ve made a crazy career change or two and have a taken one of my side hustles to the pro level (hello!), so I dig these discussions and there’s no reason not to learn from others who have done it. I haven’t dug into these podcasts, but I’m planning to check a few of them out soon. If you know of a great one on these topics hit me back.
Have a lovely weekend, y'all!
